Why should I downsize my piercing?
Downsizing refers to swapping the original jewellery to a shorter version once the swelling has subsided. Because of the way piercings heal, most jewellery needs an extra space to allow the tissue to swell in the early stages of healing. This is crucial to prevent jewellery from settling into the skin. However, once the early stages are over, this swelling will disappear. As a result, the extra space becomes visible and the original jewellery is now too long. Jewellery that is too long can easily snag and move excessively, leading to irritation and possible swelling. For oral piercings, jewellery that is too long can lead to damage to teeth, gums and other oral structures. At this stage, it is important to make a new appointment to have shorter jewellery placed to reduce these problems. The piercing has not healed enough at this point of healing to safely change your jewellery yourself. If you do not downsize, the excessive length can lead to migration or a change in the angle of the piercing, especially if the piercing is fogged up. This damage is irreversible and can become so bad that the piercing fails.
